The incumbent for this position will use virus-induced gene silencing and other functional genomics approaches to analyze the mechanisms of host resistance to the major fungal diseases of wheat.The incumbent is responsible for identifying research needs, developing hypotheses, objectives, appropriate methodology, and for the analysis, interpretation and publication of results.The incumbent confers periodically with the Research Leader concerning overall progress on the project, changes in objectives, or problems that arise. New hypotheses must be developed and thoroughly tested in order to make progress toward the identification of determinative events in disease interactions.

This position requires a Ph.D in Plant Pathology or a related field of study that has equipped the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.Knowledge of the techniques of plant pathology, genetics, biochemistry, functional genomics, genome analysis, signal transduction and gene regulation are required.
Applicants must meet basic Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standard's requirements of the scientific discipline necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
