This position is in Medical Service at VA New Jersey Health Care System. Cardiologists at VA New Jersey provide a broad range of Cardiology services to Veterans receiving care at the Medical Center in East Orange and Lyons, NJ. Each Cardiologist functions as a cooperative and collegial team member with the entire staff. The incumbent will share responsibility for inpatient teaching rounds, inpatient consultation, and outpatient clinic. In addition, the incumbent will share overall responsibility for diagnostic studies such as echocardiography (including transthoracic and transesophageal), exercise and pharmacologic stress testing, event monitor and ECG interpretations, diagnosis and management of arrhythmias. Board certification or board eligibility for Echocardiography is preferred.
The Cardiologist in this position will also function as support to the inpatient Services through consultations and to the Primary Care and Urgent Care Providers via phone, e-consults and outpatient consults. He/She will provide consultation and follow-up through Cardiology Virtual Telehealth (CVT) Clinic and communicate with patients directly by phone or through secure messaging via My HealtheVet.
The incumbent must be qualified and eligible for an academic appointment at the level of Clinical Assistant Professor at Rutgers - New Jersey Medical School. Eligibility for an academic appointment includes satisfactory completion of Cardiology fellowship training and board certification or eligibility to take the ABIM boards in Cardiovascular Disease.
Experience in supervision of trainees is highly desired. This experience can include supervision of medical residents during a fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease. Please note that our facility is an associate of the Cardiovascular Disease fellowship program through Rutgers - New Jersey Medical School, and that the incumbent will be supervising fellows, medical residents and medical students.
WORK SCHEDULE:Full Time, Monday - Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm plus on-call and weekend rotational coverage.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:a. Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with section A, chapter 3, paragraph 3g, this part.) b. Education. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: (1) Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or (2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted. (3) For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. c. Licensure and Registration. Physicians must possess a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.d. Residency Training. Physicians must have completed residency training or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA Physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA), in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or (2) Other residencies or their equivalents which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. e. Physical Requirements. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. f. English Language Proficiency. Physicians appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
Board certification or eligibility in Cardiovascular Disease and Echocardiography and satisfactory completion of a fellowship in cardiovascular disease by June 30, 2017 are required for eligibility for an academic appointment.
Excellent skills in echocardiography, exercise and pharmacologic stress testing, event monitor and ECG interpretations, diagnosis and management of arrhythmias.
Excellent skills in the performance, supervision and interpretation of cardiac imaging studies, including nuclear cardiology, transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography.BLS and ACLS certification (certification is required prior to a start date).
Experience in the supervision of trainees.

- Physical Requirements: The Cardiologist must be physically and mentally capable of performing the duties of the position including examinations, formulating diagnoses and treatment plans, and educating residents. Physical activities include sitting, standing (up to 4 hours), walking (up to 2 hours), heavy lifting (45 pounds or more), reaching above the shoulder, and repeated bending. The incumbent must be emotionally and mentally stable.
